GC MS is a strong analysis tool in the hands of research chemists. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy as a detection technique. The basics of the techniques and their advantages to the analysis of carbohydrates utilized volatile derivatives such as trimethylsilyl ethers are described. For indicating carbohydrate ring structure, the reducing nature of the saccharides, and the type of some glycosidic linkages. The use of methylation and hydrolysis, followed by silylation and GC MS analysis, is shown to be a useful technique to characterize oligomeric and polymeric carbohydrate material.
